1 John 3:7-8

  • #62 of 66 Books
  • Part of the New Testament

What is written? (ESV)

Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

What does it say?

Brethren, don't let anyone deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, just as He [Christ] is righteous. Conversely, practicing sin is of Satan, and he has been sinning from the beginning. God's Son appeared to destroy the works of Satan.

What is its immediate context?

John is stating the case for fellow believers to continue in the love of God, here reminding them of the contrast between those who practice sin (e.g. “lawlessness” vs 4) and those who have accepted Jesus and been cleansed of their sin.
