What is written? (ESV)

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come? I said to him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

What does it say?

Then one of the elders asked me about the ones clothed with white robes – who they were and where they came from? I answered that he knew, and indeed, he answered, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

What is its immediate context?

In this portion of John’s vision, an angel instructs four angels not to harm the earth until God’s servants are sealed (vss 1-3). John hears the number 144,000 (vss 4-8), then sees an innumerable multitude before the throne (vss 9-12). An elder’s question and answer concern those in white robes (vss 13-17); the text does not explicitly identify the multitude with the 144,000.
