Matthew 17:3-5
What is written? (ESV)
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.
What does it say?
Moses and Elijah appeared talking with him (Jesus) at which point Peter said, “Lord, it is good we are here. If you like, we can make three tabernacles, one for each of you.” And while he was speaking, a bright cloud came overhead and a voice said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”
What is its immediate context?
Jesus has taken Peter, James, and John to a high mountain where they witness His transfiguration. Matthew’s account parallels with Mark (9:2-13) and Luke (9:28-36).
How Matthew 17:3-5 is applied across Bible answers
Are Jesus’ words (red letter Bible) more important than other Scripture?
The Father commands that His Son is the one who should be listened to over Moses and Elijah.
God, the Father, isn't saying that what Moses and Elijah said was inccorect or irrelvant, but that now that His Son has had the 'final' word.
Who are the messengers of God?
God instructs that Jesus is the one to whom they should now pay heed, to the exclusion of Moses2 (representing the time of the Mosaic Law) and Elijah (representing the time of the prophets).
