What is written? (ESV)

And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.”

What does it say?

Mary asked the angel how she could be a virgin and still give birth. The angel replied that the Holy Spirit and power from above would come upon her to produce a holy child — the Son of God. The angel also told her that Elizabeth, her relative, had also conceived in her old age. She was considered barren but is six months along, for God makes all things possible.

What is its immediate context?

The angel Gabriel (vs 26) is speaking to Mary about the child she will conceive and bear, calling his name Jesus (vs 31).
