  • Part of the New Testament

What is written? (ESV)

Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.” But he will say, “I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!” In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.

What does it say?

Then you will plead about having eaten and drunk in my [Jesus'] presence and my teaching in your streets. But He will tell you to depart from His presence, that He doesn’t even know you, and that you are evildoers. You will be cast out, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth at seeing Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God.

What is its immediate context?

In the midst of Jesus’ public ministry, teaching parables and being challenged by the Pharisees – considered the religious elite of the day.

Jesus is traveling toward Jerusalem (vs 22). A question about whether few are saved (vs 23) leads to the warning about the narrow door and being shut out (vss 24-30).
