Hebrews 10:14-17
What is written? (ESV)
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,” then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
What does it say?
By a single offering, Christ has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. The Holy Spirit bears witness that under the new covenant God puts His laws on their hearts and writes them on their minds, and He remembers their sins and lawless deeds no more.
What is its immediate context?
A letter emphasizing Jewish Christians to hold fast in their faith remembering all of the better things through Jesus Christ. The writer here is linking the sacrifice of Christ to the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet (Jeremiah 31:33-34).
How Hebrews 10:14-17 is applied across Bible answers
What does the Holy Spirit do for the Christian today?
The Holy Spirit "witnesses" (or testifies) truths for us through Scripture. The citations are from Jeremiah 31 but effectively they are the Holy Spirit witnessing to us.
What is God’s seal?
"Seal" is not mentioned here, but a sort of "sealing" is described wherein God writes His laws on the hearts of those who are "made holy."
What was the time of Christ?
His offering completed for all "time" (dienekes: continuous, forever) the saints.
