Habakkuk 1:13

  • #35 of 66 Books
  • Part of the Old Testament

What is written? (ESV)

You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he?

What does it say?

(Habakkuk addressing God) You whose eyes are too pure to tolerate evil, why do you sit by and do nothing while traitors and wicked consume someone more righteous than themselves?

What is its immediate context?

The book records a conversation between Habakkuk and God. The prophet is questioning God’s tolerance of the sin of Judah. In this context, God has said (vss 5-11) that he will respond to their sin by raising up the Chaldeans (e.g. Babylonians).
