Galatians 5:11-12
What is written? (ESV)
But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!
What does it say?
Paul asks why he is still persecuted if he still preaches circumcision; in that case the cross's offense would be removed. He wishes that those disturbing the believers would go as far as emasculating themselves.
What is its immediate context?
Paul is making the argument that the Christian is freed from fleshly, carnal living because of their relationship in Christ (vs 1). He illustrates this with their need to no longer be circumcised, which was a fleshly designation of the Old Law. Instead, the Christian is to live/walk by the Spirit (vs 25).
