Galatians 3:27-29

What is written? (ESV)

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

What does it say?

Whoever has been baptized into Christ has been clothed in Christ. Everyone (that’s been clothed) is one in Jesus Christ, regardless if they are Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. Likewise, if you’re clothed in Christ, you are part of Abraham’s spiritual family and heirs according to the promise made to him by God.

What is its immediate context?

Paul’s letter to the churches of Galatia (a region). Chapter 3 specifically argues the Christian’s justification by faith in Christ, not the [Old] law of Moses, while at the same time, drawing strong parallels between the two. He has just stated that those “in Christ” are sons of God.

How Galatians 3:27-29 is applied across Bible answers

Does the Bible condone slavery?

Any who have been baptized into Christ are one in Christ, including slave and master. Note: This isn't saying they don't continue in their respective roles after being baptized, but that spiritually, they are one (e.g. they don't stop being a male or female, but they are equal in the blessings and promises that are in Christ).
