Deuteronomy 4:36-39
What is written? (ESV)
Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, driving out before you nations greater and mightier than yourselves, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
What does it say?
He (God, the Father) let you hear His voice so that He might discipline you. You saw His great fire and heard His words in its midst. Since He loved your fathers He chose you and redeemed you out of Egypt. He was in your midst and by His power drove stronger nations away to bring you into your land inheritance. Know for certain and remember that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth beneath; there is no other.
What is its immediate context?
Moses is retelling the Law given to him by God on Mt Sinai. This is to a new generation of people after the forty years of wandering in the wilderness and just before entering the Promised Land. Specifically, Moses recalls to their minds (vs 12) God speaking at Mount Sinai and the giving of the Law (Exodus 19-20).
