Deuteronomy 18:15
What is written? (ESV)
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—
What does it say?
God is going to raise up a prophet like Moses from among their brothers, to whom they should all listen.
What is its immediate context?
Moses speaking to Israel before Moses’ death and the people enter the Promised Land. This verse, in particular, is quoted by Peter in his sermon in Acts 3:22 and referenced by Stephen in Acts 7:37, 52 – each of them in their full context interpreting this to be Jesus Christ.
How Deuteronomy 18:15 is applied across Bible answers
Top 5: Dual fulfillment in prophecy?
As the people are about to enter the promised land, Moses tells them that God will raise up a prophet like himself to whom they should listen.
God did raise up other prophets over the next ~1,000 years who came from "among them" and to whom they should listen. But about 1,500 years later, its dual fulfillment was when Peter applied it to Jesus, whom they had just crucified. (Acts 3:22)
What distinguishes a prophet of God?
A prophet is raised up by God and sent to give a message that all should listen to.
What was God’s plan for a savior?
Like Moses, he would be a prophet (spokesman of God) and Jewish.
The immediate context notes the confirmation by inspired writers that this was referring to, or ultimately fulfilled in, Jesus.
