Colossians 3:8
What is written? (ESV)
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
What does it say?
Put all of these things away: anger, wrath, hatred, malicious speech, and vulgarity from your mouth.
What is its immediate context?
Paul is encouraging the Colossians to “keep seeking the things above” (vs 1), qualifying it with “IF” anyone has been raised in Christ. He gives many things to “put to death” (vs 5) or to “put off” (vs 8) before giving specific “in the Lord” behavioral instructions for wives (vs 18), husbands (vs 19), children (vs 20), fathers (vs 21), and slaves (vs 22).
How Colossians 3:8 is applied across Bible answers
Should a Christian use profanity?
Christians should "put away" obscene speech, if, that is, they have been "raised in Christ" (e.g. baptized).
