Acts 2:4

  • #44 of 66 Books
  • Part of the New Testament

What is written? (ESV)

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

What does it say?

They [the apostles] were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues other than their own as the Spirit directed them.

What is its immediate context?

It is the day of Pentecost and Jews have made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem from all different nations (vs 5). The apostles have what appear to be “tongues as of fire” (vs 3) resting on each one of them to the amazement of the crowd. They are able to speak in everyone’s native tongue (vs 6) and Peter begins to preach to them of Jesus.

How Acts 2:4 is applied across Bible answers

What does it mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit?

This fits exactly with what Jesus[no repeater][no repeater] had referenced. It was "not many days" from His statement in Jerusalem where the apostles received power (in this case speaking in a language they knew not).

Extra Context for this Application:

He concludes, "If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed..." (vs 17). By Peter's own testimony, it was a necessary display by God to show the Gentiles' acceptance into the kingdom. The Jewish brethren concluded, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life." (vs 18)
