  • #44 of 66 Books
  • Part of the New Testament

What is written? (ESV)

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, Come over to Macedonia and help us. And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

What does it say?

Paul had a vision of a man from Macedonia urgently asking him to come and help them. They concluded that it was from God who was wanting them to go there and preach the gospel to them.

What is its immediate context?

Paul is on his second missionary journey (with Silas). The preceding verses record attempts by them to go to certain cities/regions but they are stopped by the Spirit. They ended up in “Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.” (vs 12) Their work here leads to a local church to which Paul later writes the epistle, Philippians.
