2 Peter 3:2-3

  • #61 of 66 Books
  • Part of the New Testament

What is written? (ESV)

that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.

What does it say?

Remember the holy prophets' predictions and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles. Know first that scoffers will come in the last days, following their own, selfish lusts.

What is its immediate context?

As in his first letter, Peter is still warning of false teachers in his second letter. In this context not only does he remind them their presence is evidence that they are in the “last days”, but he encourages them of what comes next — the “day of the Lord” (vs 10).

How 2 Peter 3:2-3 is applied across Bible answers

When are the Christian last days?

Peter again links a present reality (scoffers) to the period (last days). Therefore, according to Peter (and the "holy prophets" and the "commandment of the Lord and Savior"), they were living in the last days.

Extra Context for this Application:

Further, he distinguishes their time (the "last days") from the final judgement ("day of the Lord") later in the text.
