1 Timothy 5:17-18
What is written? (ESV)
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain, and, The laborer deserves his wages.
What does it say?
Elders who lead well merit double honor, especially those laboring in preaching and teaching. Scripture supports this with the unmuzzled threshing ox and the laborer deserving wages.
What is its immediate context?
Paul’s instructions to Timothy, a young preacher, and in chapter five turns again back to specific instructions based on various roles in the church(es) including man, woman, young, old, married, widowed, and elders. Here we quotes from Deuteronomy 25:4 as he likewise does in 1 Corinthians 9:9.
