  • Part of the Old Testament

What is written? (ESV)

As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness.’ But my hand shall not be against you.

What does it say?

David recalls the proverb that wicked deeds come from wicked people and tells Saul that he will not act against him.

What is its immediate context?

Saul entered the cave where David and his men were hiding. David spared Saul and restrained his men, then called out to him after he left (vss 1-8). David points to the cut corner of Saul’s robe as evidence that he had not intended to harm him and appeals to the Lord to judge between them (vss 9-12).
