1 Peter 2:22-23
What is written? (ESV)
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
What does it say?
He (Jesus) committed no sin and didn’t lie. When he was ridiculed, He didn’t respond in kind and when He suffered, He didn’t retaliate. Rather, He continued entrusting Himself to the Father who judges righteously.
What is its immediate context?
Peter is writing to the “elect” of the “dispersion” – Christians that have been scattered throughout Galatia and Asia Minor. He is encouraging them to stand firm in the face of current persecution and reminding them of the promise they have in and through Christ. Beginning with his verse, Peter recalls several statements from Isaiah 53 and applies them to Jesus. Verses 22, 23, 24, and 25 each recall Isaiah 53 verses 9, 7, 4, and 6 respectively.
