1 John 4:13-15
What is written? (ESV)
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
What does it say?
We know that we dwell in Him [the Father] and He in us because He gave us His [Holy] Spirit. We [apostles] have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world and whoever confesses such abides together with the Father.
What is its immediate context?
John is arguing that Christians are to love each other since “God is love” (vss 8, 16) and He “loved us first” (vs 19). He goes on to say that we know we love (or are loving) our brethren “whenever we love God and obey his commandments” (5:2).
How 1 John 4:13-15 is applied across Bible answers
For whom did Christ die?
John is virtually repeating what Jesus said1. God sent his son to "be the Savior of the world" and whoever confesses Him will abide with Him (through the Holy Spirit).
Where is the Holy Spirit dwelling today?
God, the Father, dwells in us because "he has given us of his Spirit".
John makes the point throughout his letter, but one other explicit example is 3:24, "Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us."
